LARNED — In a game that went down to the wire, Hoisington High School’s boys’ basketball team was able to hang on to beat Larned 56-50 on Friday night in Larned.
Hoisington (5-1) held a 27-19 lead at halftime.
“I was pleased with how hard we played in the first half,” Hoisington head coach Kyle Haxton said. “I could tell we were gassed in the second half. These guys were shot. We just don’t get a lot of rest for our guys who usually play. I thought we had a few guys who stepped up and put in some huge minutes for us.
“Cody Richter played his tail off. That was huge for us.”
Larned (1-4) took the lead late in the third quarter on an 11-2 run.
Easton Palmer, who finished the game with a team-leading 15 points, began the run with a 3-pointer. Palmer hit a trio of treys on the night.
“We have a lot of kids who can light it up from the outside,” Larned head coach Kevin Brown said. “They just haven’t hit their stride yet. We’ve been waiting for someone. Cameron Brown and Jahman Hill have been scoring about 60 percent of our points. We’ve been looking for someone to break out.
“Easton had eight points last game, and then (Friday night), he was on fire. He hit some big shots throughout the game. It’s fun to see him do that.”
Cameron Brown scored six points in the run and finished with 10 points.
The Cardinals took a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter and was able to hold on to win, even though they shot 4-for-14 from the free-throw line in the last 1:30 of the game.
“I would hate to see what percentage we shot from the pain as well,” Haxton said. “That’s been our nemesis the last two games. We just haven’t finished inside and haven’t executed from the free-throw line. My players’ excuse is their legs. I hope that we can fight through the tired and weakness once we get back from the break.”
Hoisington was led by Anthony Broeder, who scored 19 points while playing with an injury. Broeder injured a pair of fingers on his left hand.
“I thought he did a great job on the boards,” Haxton said of Broeder. “When you’re missing your 6-8 guy, you have to have someone step up and grab those boards, and I thought that Darin Poland did a great job for us.”
Hoisington was also down its 6-foot-8 center Cody Stetler, who rolled his ankle during the Cardinals’ loss to Sedgwick.
Taylor Crawford was sidelined with a leg injury as well.
“I had two starters out,” Haxton said. “Another starter, Derrick, was barely hanging on to play with how his foot’s been killing him. Then Anthony Broeder was playing with his fingers taped up. I was proud of the way they battled, and finding a way to get a win.”
