HOISINGTON — Two ranked opponents squared off against each other in the boys championship game at the Hoisington Winter Jam on Saturday night.
The Minneapolis High School boys’ basketball team is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll.
The Hoisington High School boys’ basketball team, ranked No. 8 in 3A.
After one quarter, it was still anyone’s game as the teams were knotted at six apiece.
Minneapolis started to put some space between the two teams in the second quarter, but Derrick Kaiser helped keep the Cardinals in the game with five points, including 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.
After two quarters, the game was leaning in the Lions’ favor, 21-18.
Fresh from the locker room, the Lions began to spread the game out.
Grayson George hit a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the third quarter, and it sparked a 14-7 run that was only broken up by a Kaiser trey and layup and a Ryan Bieberle jumper.
By the end of three quarters, the Cardinals were looking at a 38-28 deficit.
The Cardinals, namely Dustin Broeder, who broke out in the fourth quarter for a quick four points in the paint, looked to try to cut into the Minneapolis lead.
Hoisington was able to keep the Lions quiet, aside from four free throws made, in the first five minutes of the final period.
However, Broeder’s four points were the only scored by the Cardinals in the stretch of time.
With less than three minutes remaining, Brady Demel made 1 of 2 free throws, but Casey Arganbright made both of his on the following possession.
With 1:57 left in the game, Luke Becker scored two points to cut the lead to 44-36.
On the following inbound pass, the Cardinals got a steal and pitched the ball out to Bieberle, who hit on open 3-pointer.
Minneapolis responded by hitting three of their next four free throws to make the game 47-41 with 1:10 remaining.
After a missed attempt at a 3-pointer, John Darrow hit a free throw, making it 48-41.
With 36.8 seconds remaining, Bieberle hit another trey, cutting the lead to 48-44.
Minneapolis continued to hit free throws, finishing 15 of 20 from the foul line in the final eight minutes.
With 9.0 left, Luke Becker rebounded a wayward 3-point attempt, and layed up for the Cardinals’ final two points of the game.
