Great Bend entertains Hays tonight in WAC basketball action

Great Bend High School opens Western Athletic Conference home action tonight, entertaining a longtime rival in Hays at Panther Gymnasium.
Tipoff for the girls game is 6, with the boys game following.
Both GBHS teams are coming off conference-opening road victories, beating Garden City last Friday.
Great Bend’s girls put together their best game of the season against Garden, a 56-35 victory, improving to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in WAC play.
GBHS senior guard Jennifer Allende led a balanced scoring attack with a career-high 11 points against the Lady Buffs.
Senior forward Cassidy Tutak added nine points, junior post player Liz Kutina and senior guard Kalie LeShore each had eight points and senior guards Lexi Brack and Kaitlee Spray scored five apiece for the Lady Panthers.
Hays (1-6) is coming off its first win of the season, a 52-40 home triumph over Liberal in its WAC opener.
Panthers taking
on 5-2 Hays boys
Great Bend’s boys will be meeting a Hays team that nudged Liberal 47-45 in their WAC opener last Friday.
Hays (5-2, 1-0) has played four common opponents of Great Bend this season, splitting those games. The Indians lost to Kearney, Neb., 52-47, a team the Panthers later fell to in the championship game of the season-opening Hays City Shoot-Out in early December, and Pratt in non-conference play on the road, 44-38.
Great Bend (4-3, 1-0) beat Pratt in non-conference play at home before Christmas.
The Panthers held off Garden City 42-37 Friday night to make their conference opener a successful one.
Roderick Frise, a 6-foot-4 junior forward, led the Panthers with 12 points. Senior guard Will Gray added nine points, including 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch, and senior swingman Dakota Ellis scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
The Panthers got out to a 15-4 lead out of the gate in the first quarter and then had to hold on late after managing just 27 points during the final three periods.

Chris Burley pins down first place at 112 pounds
DERBY — Great Bend High’s wrestling team tied for eighth place with Valley Center on Saturday at the 15-team Derby Invitational.
Chris Burley of Great Bend improved his record to 15-1 on the season after capturing first place in the 112-pound weight division.
Louis Burley (152), Chris’ older brother, captured fourth place, and Jake Schridde (160) took fifth place for the Panthers.

Barton plays host
to DCCC on Wednesday
Barton Community College’s men’s basketball team (12-4, 0-2) plays host to Dodge City Wednesday night at 8 at home.
DCCC’s men are 12-4, 1-1.
The Cougars are coming off an 82-70 loss at No. 25 Seward on Saturday night.
BCC’s women (7-8, 0-2) fell to Seward 77-66 Saturday night.
Dodge’s women are 7-9, 0-2.
