HOISINGTON – The Hoisington High School wrestling team played host to the Cardinal Corner Classic Wrestling Tournament on Friday, and finished in third place.
Great Bend took second place behind Concordia. Larned took home ninth place.
The Panthers had three wrestlers finish in first place in their weight class. Chris Burley took first in the 112-pound weight class. Damian Pflughoeft took first place in the 140 division and Ryan DesLauriers took first place in the 103 class.
Hoisington had four wrestlers with first-place finishes: Russell Birt (112), Zach Sanders (130), Eric Hellerud (171) and Body Batt (189).
“I thought our team wrestled very well today,” Cardinals head coach Daniel Schmidt said. “The Cardinal wrestling nation should be very proud of how their kids represented their community.”
The Cardinals were only four points short of Great Bend in the team standings.
“Even in the most difficult of times at points in the tournament our kids never quit,” Schmidt said. “As you watched them compete throughout the day, one certainly could get the sense that the Cards are coming of age.”
Larned’s top finisher was Elvis Duran, who took third place in the 112 weight class.
Great Bend is on hiatus until Jan. 7, when they compete in Derby.
Hoisington is finished until after the holidays and will be back in action on Jan. 6 at the Thomas More Prep-Marian Round Robin.
