Winter is here, the new year has begun and that can only mean one thing: it’s high school bowling season again.
The Great Bend High School bowling team is in full swing and preparing for its first match in Dodge City on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
In the Panthers three previous seasons, Panthers head coach Mike Perry, along with assistant coach Jim Mayberry, have seen both the girls’ and boys’ team qualify for the Class 5-1A state tournament once.
“I think we are the only school in the (Western Athletic Conference) to have both teams qualify for state,” Perry said. “Our first year, we had two girls and one boy qualify as individuals. Our second year, the girls qualified as a team and last year, the boys went to state.”
Perry said that he expects each team to have a strong chance to repeat.
“I think the boys’ strength is that we are sophomores instead of freshman this year,” Perry said. “They act more like a team this year.
“I think the girls are even stronger than the boys are this year.”
Perry is returning four boys from last year’s state-qualifying team: senior Tyler Jones and sophomores Dakota Conaway, Daniel Herrman and Eric Ruiz.
“Daniel Herrman was the regional champion last year as a freshman,” Perry said.
However, Great Bend graduated two seniors from the team.
“We did lose two impact seniors from last year,” Perry said. “Jeff Hipp finished in eighth place at state and Logan Reinert also went to state.”
The girls’ team lost Katelyn Kaiser and Kayci Huslig, both state qualifiers last year.
Huslig was the top bowler at Great Bend. She qualified for state three times, finishing in 15th, fifth and 16th place, respectively.
“She has every bowling record at the high school except for one, I think,” Perry said.
Huslig also was the WAC MVP last season.
“On the flip side, I have an outstanding freshman this year,” Perry said. “Miranda Hejny is just outstanding. She is in the top three on the team as a freshman and she is pushing to be No. 1.”
Perry said that he has eight girls ready to compete as the varsity team, which consists of a high school’s top six bowlers.
“The girls are shooting in the 500 range as a series,” Perry said. “That’s good enough to win the WAC.”
