LARNED — The Macksville High School girls’ basketball team outscored Spearville in all four quarters to cruise to a 49-32 finish to take the Larned Keady Basketball Classic girls’ championship game on Saturday night.
“We stuck to our plan,” Mustangs head coach Kat McAllister said. “We came out firing and we just didn’t quit. I really liked the intensity that we got from all the girls.”
It is the first time the Macksville girls have won the Larned opening tournament since its beginning in 1983.
Since 2006, the Hoisington Lady Cardinals had been reigning champions, but a semifinals comeback by the Mustangs from nine points down with less than three minutes left knocked Hoisington out of the running this year.
Before Hoisington, Larned had won every year from 1986 to 2005.
It was all Megan Wood early for Macksville. Wood, who finished with game-high 15 points, scored six of the Mustangs’ 12 first-quarter points.
“Megan is a great athlete,” McAllister said. “She has a great work ethic. She’s a great team leader.
“She’s all that, and she’s not going to quit until the game is over.”
Jena Clowers, who put up 12 points, added two points and Yasnaya Susoef added a 3-pointer to outscore the Lancers 12-8 in the first period.
Macksville increased its lead in the second quarter. Wood added another four points and Suseoff drained her second trey to give the Mustangs a 22-15 lead at halftime.
After the break, the Mustangs (4-0) picked up where they left off. Clowers and Wood led the Mustangs with four points each in a third period where the Mustangs outscored the Lancers, 15-10.
The Mustangs offense continued to knock down shots, scoring nine unanswered points to start the fourth quarter. Mindy Wood converted on a three-point play to raise the Mustangs over the Lancers.
“I don’t know why,” McAllister said when asked why her shooters were more timid early on in the tournament. “That was our plan, to move the ball and get some good looks.”
