The Great Bend High School boys’ swim team has finished in first place in every swim meet it has attended since finishing second to Salina South in the season opener.
Tuesday’s meet in Hutchinson was no different.
The Panthers took first place with 444 points, 108 points ahead of second-place Hutchinson.
Overall, the Panthers had 31 time improvements, meaning 37 percent of the team’s times were improved, but Panthers head coach Steve Beaumont said that 37 percent wasn’t enough.
“Our goal is 50 percent,” Beaumont said. “I think the last two meets we’ve been underneath 40 percent. It is a little lower than we’d like to see, but I’m not terribly concerned.”
The Hutchinson meet was an opportunity for Beaumont to give some different kids a chance at events they usually don’t swim.
“We swam OK,” Beaumont said. “It wasn’t our best meet in terms of our time, but we knew how we’d stack up against most of the teams at the meet so we used the opportunity to mix things up.
“We try to get new kids in new races. It helps us build some more depth.”
The Panthers are on hiatus until Jan. 12, when Great Bend travels to Manhattan. Beaumont said the team is progressing well.
“I think we’re where we need to be right not,” Beaumont said. “Coming in, we had some question marks about who was going to fill in holes left from last year, but I think we have those spots filled. We’re on track.”
