ELLINWOOD — Ellinwood quarterback/linebacker Luke Heinz delivered a pair of dramatic highlights in a 24-14 football setback to 3A Smoky Valley Friday.

Heinz scored on a dazzling 80-yard fumble return when Viking Crew Elliot was unable to handle a shotgun snap from the Eagle 5-yard line.

The 14-point turnaround helped the Eagles (1-0) outscored the Vikings 14-8 after halftime. The Class 1A Eagles showed improvement after halftime playing their first full four quarters.

Ellinwood's Cade Coleman caught a 9-yard scoring strike from Heinz.

Smoky Valley's lightning-fast Elliot scored on 14- and 63-yard runs against a hard-nosed Ellinwood defense. Quarterback Mason Riede scored on a 12-yard run.

The Vikings (2-0) converted three 3-point plays. Viking Eli Lambert intercepted a pass in Ellinwood's endzone to prevent a score.
