Panthers blank Mulvane
WICHITA —The Great Bend High School boys’ soccer team won its first game of the season on Monday, blanking Mulvane 10-0 at the Titan Classic hosted by Wichita South.
Oscar Torres scored five goals, Noel Rodriguez scored three, Alex Urias and Jose Santana scored one each to give the Panthers their first win.
The Panthers are back in action tonight at 6 in Wichita against Circle.

GBHS JV, frosh fall
GARDEN PLAIN — The Great Bend High School junior varsity and freshman football teams made the two-hour-long trip to Garden Plain on Tuesday night.
It was season-opening games for both Panthers teams.
In the junior varsity game, the Panthers seized an early 8-0 lead before Garden Plain scored 26 unanswered points in posting a 26-8 victory.
In the freshman game, Garden Plain shut out the Panthers, 20-0.
Both GBHS teams return to action on Monday, Sept. 20, when they entertain Garden City. The ninth-grade game kicks off at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity at 6.

BCC men’s soccer now 1-3-1 after Texas Trip
TYLER, TEXAS — The Barton Community College men’s soccer team traveled to Tyler, Texas, on Labor Day weekend to on play against two opponents ranked in the top 10 of the Aug. 1 NJCAA poll — No. 1 Tyler and No. 9 San Jacinto.
Barton is 1-3-1 overall after the weekend with its only win coming in a 7-2 victory over Bethany College last week.
The Cougars battled Tyler into double overtime and finished the game in a 0-0 draw.
“They had more shots, more opportunities and more possession of the ball,” Cougars head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. “But we had our chances too. We definitely deserved the draw.”
Nathan Garrison got the shutout for the Cougars with four saves. Tyler outshot Barton 12-5, and had four shots on goal.
The only shot on goal recorded for the Cougars was taken by Kevin Ellis.
“We need more confidence in front of the net,” Twelvetrees said. “We need to believe we can win games.”
The Cougars lost to San Jacinto 3-2 on Sunday.
“We made some very, very poor defensive mistakes early on that cost us,” Twelvetrees said. “We dug a hole that we ultimately couldn’t get ourselves out of.”
San Jacinto scored three unassisted goals against Nathan Garrison in the first 46 minutes of the game.
“We were able to come back with in one goal,” Twelvetrees said. “We had plenty of time left and we had some good opportunities. We just weren’t able to capitalize.”
Kevin Ellis scored first for the Cougars at the 55th minute. Ricardo Yeverino scored 10 minutes later, assisted by Sam McCrillis.
The Cougars took nine shots in the second half of the game and finished the game out shooting San Jacinto 13-12.
