Pre-plant wheat school

Believe it or not, fall is fast approaching, and soon it will be time to plant the 2017 wheat crop. Right now many producers are thinking about the different attributes that go into picking a variety of wheat to plant for the next year. Decisions to be made about a specific variety include disease resistance, straw strength, and drought hardiness to name a few. Other decisions that need to be thought over before planting even starts might include seed treatment options, drill performance and timing.
K-State Research and Extension will be hosting a Pre-Plant Wheat School from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 30, at the American Ag Credit building, located at 5634 10th Street in Great Bend. Dr. Romulo Lollito, K-State Wheat Specialist, Dr. Eric DeWolf, K-State Plant Pathologist, and Dr. Lucas Haag, K-State North West Agronomist will be on hand to cover various management practices listed above to assist in making the correct decisions for your next crop. Our specialists will evaluate performances of individual varieties in research trials throughout the state, and update everyone on new research that is presently being conducted. They will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have on wheat production for 2017.
Pre-registration for this class is requested by calling 620-793-1910 or email at aboor@ksu.edu by August 26th. There must be 10 participants to be able to host the program. A thank you goes out to American Ag Credit for the use of their building, and to Ed Junior Farms for sponsoring Root Beer Floats as refreshments.
