American State Bancshares Chairman Lee Borck announced the appointment of Greg Quarles as president and CEO of the bank holding company. American State Bancshares is a multi-bank holding company that owns American State Bank & Trust and Rose Hill Bank. Quarles will continue to serve as president and CEO of American State Bank & Trust, a position he has held since 2016.
Borck made the announcement following the retirement of Don Lackamp who served in the role as president and CEO for the holding company for the past 13 years.
“We appreciate Don’s service and his leadership during our growth, and we wish him well in his well-earned retirement,” Borck said.
During Lackamp’s tenure American State Bancshares assets grew from $172 million to more than $675 million through the end of 2017.
Before Quarles joined American State Bank & Trust in 2016 he served as president of H&R Block Financial Services and president of H&R Block Bank where he was responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the financial products and services offered through H&R Block, including the H&R Block Emerald Prepaid MasterCard.
“We are pleased to make this announcement about Greg given his extensive experience in executive positions in the financial industry and his recent leadership of American Bank & Trust,” Borck said. “Greg will be working closely with our employees and leadership to further grow our banks by serving our customers with the best service and products.”
Prior to re-joining H&R Block Bank in March 2012, he served as chief enterprise risk officer in charge of Enterprise Risk Management and Governance for GE Capital Financial Inc. He also served as chief risk officer for H&R Block Bank from 2006 to 2011.
Quarles served with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in a variety of leadership roles over an 18-year career. In these roles, he developed an advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance risk management, credit risk analysis and portfolio administration, as well as enterprise risk management and governance practices and principles.
Quarles holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Kansas and Bachelor’s in Finance from Texas Tech University. He received the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Alliance for Economic Inclusion Star Award for his efforts in developing innovative products and services to meet the needs of the unbanked and under-banked populations. He has also received multiple industry awards for developing innovative and consumer friendly products and services.
He served on the Nelson Atkins Museum Business Council, the FDIC Alliance for Economic Inclusion New Products Steering Committee, and on the Boards of the Missouri Colleges Fund and Missouri Bankers Association and currently serves on the State Affairs Committee of the Kansas Bankers Association.
Greg and his wife Leslie have two adult sons, Austin Quarles of Palo Alto, Calif., and Brooks Quarles of Lawrence.
