Hello and happy Friday from the Great Bend Public Library. We have several exciting events coming up soon. Today, Friday, Aug. 4, we have an Adult’s Night Out Movie at 7 p.m. Our north doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and will close again at 7:15 p.m.
On Monday, Aug. 7, there will be Crochet @ the Library at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
On Friday, Aug. 11, there will be Crochet @ the Library at 2 p.m.
Coming up we have the Open Book Club on Aug. 15.
On Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 3 p.m. we have The Cosmosphere and Space Center of Hutchinson coming out to do a presentation on Astronomy and the upcoming total solar eclipse.
On Aug. 21 there is going to be a total solar eclipse traveling across North America for the first time since 1918. For the Great Bend Area, the solar eclipse will start around 11:33 a.m. It will hit its peak at 1 p.m. and end at 2:27 p.m. We are fortunate enough to be very close to the path of totality. Great Bend will see 90 percent of the total eclipse. The Kansas City Area will be in the 100 percent range.
Because of this rare event, The Great Bend Public Library and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center both have solar eclipse parties planned. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will have Giant yard games, s’mores, and hotdogs. Their party starts at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. We will start our party at 11:30 a.m. and it will end at 1:30 p.m. Stop by for a hotdog, and participate in several different activities, and maybe win a free door prize item while you watch the eclipse with the library staff. Both events have ISO certified solar eclipse glasses available for free.
One gentle reminder: make sure and only look at the sun with certified glasses. During the event it is a great idea to look at the sun and track the progress of the eclipse every 15 to 20 minutes. If you can’t make it out to the Wetlands Education Center try to stop by the library. We don’t want anyone to miss out on this celestial event.
On Aug. 23 there will be a low vision fair held by Cathy Rhan, the Talking Books consultant with the Central Kansas Library System. This fair will feature multiple vendors and presenters from across Kansas. Mark your calendar for this special event dedicated to helping those with low vision or those who are otherwise visually impaired.
