Incumbent Great Bend City Council Ward 2 Councilwoman Jolene Biggs will serve another term after she defeated challenger Chelsea Morris in Tuesday’s general election.
Biggs garnered 553 votes to Morris’s 271. There was also one write-in vote cast.
However, there were no filings for the Ward 4 seat. It was filled by Junior Welsch, who is moving and did not re-file.
There were five write-in candidates. Natalie K. Towns received eight votes, Randy Myers received five, Larry Parsons received five, Larry Partridge received two and Tim Nollette received two.
It would take a simple majority to win, but, County Clerk Donna Zimmerman said more mail-in ballots may come in through Friday and the total excludes provisional ballots. The final results may not be known until the votes are canvassed Monday.
Also on the ballot was one candidate each filing for Wards 1 and 3. Incumbents Alan Moeder in Ward 1 and Cory Urban in Ward 3 ran unopposed.
Moeder received 321 votes with 11 write-ins. Urban received 521 with six write-ins.
All vote totals remain unofficial and don’t include provisional ballots, those cast by voters who moved within the county or changed names. The vote counts won’t be certified until they are canvassed Monday morning by the Barton County Commission, acting as the Board of Canvassers.
The council consists of eight members, with two representing each of the four wards. Every two years, one seat in each ward is up for election.
According to a charter ordinance approved by the council recently, the mayor and newly elected council members take office at the first council meeting in January following their November election.
