Barton announces Honor Scholarship recipients

Barton Community College has announced recipients of Honor Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. To earn an Honor Scholarship at Barton, the student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49. These awards are administered by Barton’s Financial Aid Office. The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of Honor Awards:

Claflin

Nathaniel Long, a 2010 graduate of Claflin High School, is a freshman general studies major at Barton. In high school, he was active in C-Club, all-school play, Scholars Bowl and Student Council. He served as a manager for football, basketball and track. He earned academic honors and lettered in football, basketball and track managing. He is the son of Steve and Patricia Long, Claflin.

Alexandria Radenberg, a 2010 graduate of CHS, is a freshman liberal arts major at Barton. In high school, she was active in band, choir and FFA. She is the daughter of Mark and Mary Radenberg, Claflin.

Nolan Wirth, a 2010 graduate of CHS, is a freshman majoring in criminal justice at Barton. In high school, he was active in journalism, Freshman Mentor, A Cappella Choir, Drama Club, and football and track in his freshman and sophomore years. He lettered twice in journalism. He is the daughter of Brad and Noni Wintholz.

Eudora

Carissa Nott, a 2010 graduate of Lawrence High School, is a freshman majoring in athletic training at Barton. In high school, she was active in Link Crew and varsity cheerleading. She is the daughter of Leslie Payne and Jeff Nott.

Fredonia

Lindsey Wait, a 2010 graduate of Fredonia High School, is a freshman physical therapy major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, FFA, Art Club, Spanish Club, varsity golf team, cheer squad, Music Club, Science Club, Select Choir and Leo Lions. She was named to the honor roll for four years and earned a Hire Me First Card and Jacket Card. She placed 13th individually in state golf competition and was a member of the third-place golf team at state. She is the daughter of Landen and Kim Wait, Fredonia.

Great Bend

Allison Ohnmacht, a 2010 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dental hygiene. In high school, she was active in Pep Club, Spanish Club, Kayettes, basketball and volleyball. She was named to the honor roll and earned a Certificate of Outstanding Academic Achievement. She is the daughter of Steve and Brenda Ohnmacht, Great Bend.

Kendra Reed, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton planning to major in dietetics. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, track, cross country, basketball and danceline. She graduated summa cum laude and became the 5A long jump state champion in 2007. She is the daughter of Linda Johnson, Great Bend.

Marissa Roach, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business/culinary. In high school, she was active in band, choir and Kayettes. She is the daughter of Melissa and Shannon Roach, Great Bend.

Cody Ruble, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman general education/architecture major at Barton. In high school, he was active in football and track all four years of high school. He was named to the 3.0-3.9 Honor Roll for all four years and lettered in football in his senior year. He is the son of Larry and Lorrie Ruble, Great Bend.

Sarah Schenk, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in danceline. She is the daughter of Greg and Kim Schenk, Great Bend.

Kristen Sisson, a 2010 graduate of GHBS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in tennis, FFA, Kayettes, Pep Club and choir. She is the daughter of Scott and Dawn Sisson, Great Bend.

Jamie Stroud, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman agriculture/equine science major at Barton. In high school, she served as FFA president and was active in 4-H, Freshman Mentor Program, A Cappella Choir and Kayettes. She also is a member of Collegiate Farm Bureau. She is a recipient of the Green Hand Award and was selected for Washington Leadership Conference. She was named to "Who’s Who Among American High School Students." She is the daughter of Eugene and Darla Stroud, Great Bend.

Hays

Alexa Schoaff, a 2010 graduate of Hays High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in pediatric nursing. In high school, she served on Student Council and was active in Spirit Club, Peer Team, Leadership Team and yearbook. She also served as a manager for track, soccer and cross country. She is the daughter of Brian and Laura Shoaff, Hays.

Tyler Rathke, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman secondary education major at Barton. In high school, he was active in track and field, basketball, soccer, Channel 13, Spirit Club and Webteam. He became the 2009 5A State Discus Champion and was named 2008-09 and 2009-10 Honorable Mention All-Conference in basketball. He is the son of Eric and Charlotte Rathke, Hays.

Hesston

Morgan Lowery, a 2010 graduate of Hesston High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in radiology. In high school, she was active in varsity softball. She was named to First Team All-League in her sophomore and junior years and earned Honorable Mention GPA in 2009. She is the daughter of Rocky Lowery, Wichita, and Tina Haga, Hesston.

Hoisington

Ashleigh Potter, a 2010 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman elementary education major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, cross country, basketball, track and yearbook. She was named to the yearbook and lettered in cross country and track. She is the daughter of Michael and Nicole Potter, Hoisington.

Lakin

Kathleen Duncan, a 2010 graduate of Lakin High School, is a freshman majoring in accounting/business management at Barton. In high school, she was active in women’s golf three years, Partners in Community Service four years, Student Council, Site Council, Big Brothers Big Sisters and softball. She participated in golf regional and state competition, earning two letters, and she served as president of PICS. She earned honorable mention in regional and state band events. She is the daughter of Monte and Monika Duncan, Lakin.

Larned

Kristin Schartz, a 2010 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dental hygiene. She is the daughter of Bert and Karla Schartz, Larned.

Bryce King, a 2010 graduate of LHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. In high school, he was active in cross country one year, basketball four years and golf four years. He was named to the honor roll and was recognized as Student of the Month for Academics. He is the son of Scott and Barb King, Larned.

Minneola

Erin Sughroue, a 2010 graduate of Dodge City High School, is a freshman biology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, volleyball, cross country, basketball, track and field, choir, band, FFA and musicals. She was named All-Tournament Academic Cheerleader and participated in state track as a freshman and junior, state cross country, state choir and state band competition. She is the daughter of Tomi Sughroue, Minneola, and Pat Sughroue, Phillipsburg.

Newton

Suzanne Mills, a 2009 graduate of Newton High School, is a sophomore science major at Barton. In high school, she was active in cheerleading and FFA. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll and earned the Green Hand Award and Chapter FFA degree. She was named All-American Cheerleader. She is the daughter of Lyndi and Ray Salas, Newton.

Osborne

Jacob Bertrand, a 2008 graduate of Osborne High School, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton. In high school, he was active in basketball, football, golf, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Little Friends. He also served as a Student Council representative. He is the son of Sherri Bertrand, Osborne.

Overland Park

Carly Schraeder, a 2010 graduate of Blue Valley North High School, is a freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in softball and was named Honorable Mention Second Team All-City. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and Tharon Schraeder, Overland Park.

Ozawkie

Joshua Johnson, a 2010 graduate of Jefferson West High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in EMT/Fire Science. In high school, he was active in Students Against Driving Drunk, Big Brothers Big Sisters, football, basketball, golf, wrestling, cross country and baseball. He was named to the High Honor Roll. He is the son of Greg and Paula Johnson, Ozawkie.

Macksville

Megan Welch, a 2010 graduate of Macksville High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in volleyball, cheerleading, tennis, track and Kayettes. She also attended Girls’ State. She is the daughter of Kevin and Michell Welch, Macksville.

Plains

Cade Wallace, a 2010 graduate of Southwestern Heights High School, is a freshman physical education major at Barton. In high school, he was active in cheerleading. He is the son of Chad and Alisa Wallace, Plains.

Salina

Cerissa McMillan, a 2010 graduate of Salina Central High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in basketball, track and cross country and was named to Second Team All-League. She is the daughter of Leroy and Sharol McMillan, Salina.

Wichita

Casey Amos, a 2010 graduate of Campus High School, is a freshman pre-pharmacy major at Barton. In high school, he was active in yell leading, track and field, soccer and Student Council. He received honors in varsity cheerleading two years, varsity track four years and varsity soccer two years. He is the son of Angi and Joe Amos, Wichita.

Monica McCarthy, a 2010 graduate of Wichita Heights High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in Student Council, Leadership Advisory Board, and club and high school soccer. She earned academic honors and was involved in advanced placement classes. She is the daughter of John and Connie McCarthy, Wichita.
