BCC announces scholarship winners

Barton Community College has announced recipients of Excellence Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. To qualify for an Excellence Award, a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 and be enrolled full time at Barton. These awards are administered by Barton’s Financial Aid Office. The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of the scholarships:

Abilene

Desiree Diehl, a 2010 graduate of Abilene High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in secondary education. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, dance team, track, forensics and yearbook. She competed in state track and state forensics and receive the 3.8 or higher academic award. She also was named All-American in cheer and dance. She is the daughter of Don and Linda Diehl, Abilene.

Andover

James Hilts, a 2009 graduate of Andover High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in secondary education and political science. In high school, he was active in varsity baseball and football. He is the son of Rick and Lori Hilts, Andover.

Bennington

Patrick Romm, a 2010 graduate of Solomon Riverside Academy (home school), is a freshman pre-chiropractic major at Barton. In high school, he was active in basketball all four years. He is the SVHE varsity basketball record holder for most three-pointers in one game and most total points in one game. He is the son of Charles and Nancy Romm, Bennington.

Bucklin

Aimee Stuart, a 2010 graduate of Bucklin High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball four years, Serendipity one year and Scholars Bowl three years. She was named to the honor roll and was a Duke Talent Search Award recipient. She is the daughter of Jim and Teresa Stuart, Bucklin.

Derby

Erika Smith, a 2010 graduate of Derby High School, is a freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in choir and varsity soccer. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named a Kansas Honors Scholar. She is the daughter of Jason and Vicki Smith, Derby.

Goddard

Deedra Richard, a 2010 graduate of Goddard High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in elementary education. In high school, she was active in soccer, basketball, tennis, Campus Life, Sprint Club and Outloud. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named a Wendy’s Heisman Female Candidate and was named to the 2007 League Second Team in soccer, 2008 League Second Team Midfield and 2009 6A All-Regional Second Team girls’ soccer offense. She is the daughter of Dave and Denise Richard, Goddard.

Great Bend

Jerika Cameron, a 2010 graduate of Grreat Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, cheer, softball, Kayettes and Pep Club. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Donya Savoie and Greg Savoie.

Edith Reza, a 2010 gradute of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in business or nursing. In high school, she was active in Freshman Mentoring Program, Student Council, German Club and Kayettes. She was editor-in-chief of the high school year book and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She is the daughter of Jose Reza Adriana Martinez.

Kate Stansfield, a 2010 gradute of GBHS, is a freshman general education major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, orchestra and track. She is the daughter of Kevin and Debbie Stansfield, Great Bend.

Brenna Stueder, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman food science major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, Madrigal Pops Singers, Swim Team and Distributive Education Clubs of America. She is the daughter of Terry and MelEesa Stueder, Great Bend.

Hesston

Jessica Betts, a 2010 gradute of Hesston High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in forensics, singers, choir, Villa Club, cross country and track. She was named to the honor roll and achieved the Standard of Excellence. She is the daughter of Tim and Cindy Betts, Hesston.

Hoisington

Michael Richards, a 2010 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman education major at Barton. In high school, he was active in football four years, baseball two years, track one year and powerlifting two years. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He was named All-League Second Team Defensive Back. He is the son of Randy and Carla Richards, Hoisington.

Holyrood

Alexis Sneath, a 2010 graduate of Quivira Heights High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in FFA four years and choir three years. She earned the Greenhand Award in FFA and was named to the B Honor Roll for three years. She earned the District GPA Honor and the Sophomore Achievement Award. She is the daughter of Julie Bradford and Cory Sneath, Holyrood.

Junction City

Ashley Goudey, a 2009 graduate of Junction City High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in secondary education. In high school, she was active in tennis and Flagline. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named a Kansas Honor Scholar. She is the daughter of Dawn and Tom Goudey, Junction City.

Kenneth Marion, a 2010 graduate of Apostolic Academy in Junction City, is a freshman at Barton majoring in human resource management. In high school, he served as 2008-2009 Student Senate president and was active in Bible Quizzing, choir and Yard Team. He was named 2008 Student of the Year, honored for citizenship and was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Kenneth Marion Sr. and Tracy M. Sharp-Marion, Junction City.

Sarah Schmidt, a 2010 graduate of JCHC, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in Flagline three years, marching band four years, volleyball, two years, softball four years, cheerleading one year and Girls’ Athletic Leadership Skills. She was named Softball Centennial League Honorable Mention as a sophomore and League Second Team as a junior. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and received academic letters all four years. She lettered in softball three years, volleyball one year and cheerleading one year. She is the daughter of Larry and Kay Schmidt, Junction City.

Lyons

Jessica Martinez, a 2010 graduate of Lyons High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in Student Council, ROTC, tennis, band, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and the school play. She was named to the High Honor Roll, and earned a Certificate of Outstanding Academic Achievement. She lettered in band and tennis. She is the daughter of Patricia Salinas, Lyons.

Kansas City

Darius Hill, a 2010 graduate of F.L. Schlagle High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in sports management. In high school, he was active in basketball. He was named to the honor roll and was named Math Achiever, Science Achiever, Scholar Athlete, All-KCKL Basketball Honorable Mention as a junior and Second Team as a senior. He also received honors as Schlagle Basketball Newcomer of the Year, Gardner Edgerton/Olathe South tourney first team, Valley Center tourney second team, All-State Basketball Honorable Mention and Schlagle Basketball Most Valuable Player. He is the son of Dametria Garrett, Kansas City.

Marquette

Jessamie Linder, a 2010 graduate of Smoky Valley High School, is a freshman pre-veterinary medicine major at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, Wildfires Dance Team and track. She is the daughter of Kerry and Jennnifer Linder, Marquette.

McCracken

Sheila Brown, a 2009 graduate of LaCrosse High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in criminal justice. She was named to the Dean’s List at Barton. She is the daughter of Cecilia Gilbert, McCracken.

McPherson

Tessa Sterling, a 2010 graduate of McPherson High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dental hygiene. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Catholic Youth Organization, softball and Lady Express summer softball. She was named to the High Honor Roll four years and was named softball honorable mention in her freshman and junior years. She is the daughter of Tracy and Cam Sterling, McPherson.

Plains

Lindsay Garinger, a 2010 graduate of Southwestern Heights High School, is freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, softball, Student Council, Kansas Association for Youth, FFA, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, choir, Showchoir, band, jazz band, pep band and Web Design. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named a KU Honor Student. She earned exemplary honors in Math Assessment and Reading Assessment. She is the daughter of Tina Garinger and John Garinger.

Riley

Tara Berry, a 2010 graduate of Riley County High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in track, volleyball, Pep Club and choir. She earned honors in track, volleyball and choir. Her guardians are Angie Adorno and Ronny Adorno, Riley.

Russell

Westin Branick, a 2010 graduate of Russell High School, is a freshman biology major at Barton. In high school, he served as Student Council president and was active in Key Club, Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk, FFA, track and cross country. He received honors for Perfect Attendance and was named to the Honor Roll, 4.0 Club. He is the son of Joe and Terry Branick, Russell.

St. John

Amanda Roach, a 2010 graduate of St. John High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dental hygiene. In high school, she was active in Pratt Academic Olympics, Kayettes, Youth Group, Vacation Bible School, Crop Walk, Pep Band, Pep Club and tennis. She also served as senior class president. She was named a Kansas Honor Student. She also received honors in sports and band. She is the daughter of Shannon and Melissa Roach and Marc and Michelle Fischer.

Salina

Lauren Aldrich, a 2010 graduate of Salina South High School, is a freshman physical education major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Peppers dance team and served as baseball manager. She was an Honor Student and two-year captain of Peppers. She is the daughter on Mike and Teri Aldrich, Salina.

Scott City

Jade Glunz, a 2010 graduate of Scott Community High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in radiology. In high school, she earned membership in the National Honor Society and was active in basketball, volleyball, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Student Council. She was chosen as a homecoming attendant. She lettered in volleyball and basketball all four years and was named All-tournament and All-League Honorable Mention. She is the daughter of Greg and Karla Glunz, Scott City.

Topeka

Rachel Ukena, a 2010 graduate of Topeka High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in soccer, basketball and photography. She was named to the honor roll and was a four-year varsity letter winner in soccer. She is the daughter of Barry and Cathy Ukena, Topeka.

Casey Hitch, a 2010 graduate of Wamego High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in football, golf, Future Business Leaders of America and Scholars Bowl. He was a state qualifier in golf for 2008 and 2009. He is the son of Ken and Christie Hitch, Wamego.

Wellington

Aleeya Ybarra, a 2010 graduate of Wellington High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. In high school, she participated in Upwad Bound and softball. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named Second Team All-League Utility Player of 2009 in softball. She is the daughter of Bucky and Andrea Ybarra, Wellington.
