The 35th annual Kansas High School Math Relays at Fort Hays State University will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 14, in the Memorial Union on the Fort Hays State University campus.
Students will compete in a series of six tests: algebra, geometry, number sense, applications, trigonometry and calculations with calculators.
“Each student is given the exact same test and the same 20-minute time limit,” said Dr. Bill Weber, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. “Students can enter individually or as a team of three in a relay format, where each teammate individually works on the paper for one-third of the time limit before handing it off to their teammate.”
The top three places in the individual and team categories for each grade and each subject will receive awards. The top three schools overall also win awards based on the total points they earn. The school awards will be noted in their Kansas State High School Activities Association classification. Divisions are marked as 1A; 2A to 3A; and 4A to 6A.
Weber, a previous competitor in the Relays, predicts that 500 to 600 students from about 50 schools will compete. “Most of the students come from a 200-mile range. We do not usually get anyone farther than Salina.”
