ELLINWOOD — An Ellinwood man died Tuesday after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a pickup around 11 a.m. in the 500 block of East E St., near the Lakin Comanche Cemetery.
Robert E. Merritt, 79, was riding his bicycle west on E Street in the eastbound lane against traffic, according to reports. He made a sudden turn to the north heading into the cemetery and was struck by a 2006 Chevy Silverado in the westbound lane, sending the cyclist into a north ditch.
According to Ellinwood Police Chief Art Keffer, Merritt was pronounced dead at the scene by the local coroner. Merritt had recently moved back to Ellinwood after residing in Texas.
The crash is being ruled as an accident with no charges placed on the driver.
