ALDEN – A traffic stop in Ellinwood Wednesday afternoon devolved into a high-speed chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies before ending in a standoff in Alden, Rice County Sheriff Bryant Evans said.
According to Evans, the suspect surrendered at his residence in Alden after keeping officers at bay for about a half an hour. He remains in custody in the Rice County Jail with charges pending.
The suspect’s name has not been released.
Prior to his being arrested, the suspect sped from the scene of the traffic stop in Ellinwood at about 3 p.m. Speeds reached up to 90 miles per hour as Ellinwood police officers pursued him into Rice County.
Rice County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined the chase, Evans said. At one point, the suspect drove head-on towards a Sterling Police Department officer, but a collision was avoided.
Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was called by Ellinwood to assist. His department was involved in the pursuit and was ready to call in the BCSO entry team, but the suspect surrendered before that the team arrived.
The nature of the Ellinwood stop was not known at presstime.
