The Cardinal Catalog

Hoisington Public Library is making plans for our reopening schedule — sometime in June. Watch our Facebook page for the latest updates.

If you haven’t returned books that were checked out prior to the shutdown, we ask that these are returned. We are sorting through those and returning them to other libraries or our shelves.

We request patrons wear a mask to protect us just as we will wear a mask to protect you when we open. Some staff or patrons present when you come in may be at higher risk.

Here are a few of our new books:

“The Book of Longings.” Sue Monk Kidd. A first-century intellectual fights the limitations imposed on women before an encounter with an 18-year-old Jesus leads to their marriage, his dangerous public ministry and her flight to safety in Alexandria.

“Devoted.” Dean Koontz. Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening. A uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed, Kipp is devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it’s too late. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he’s coming after Woody and his mother. Only a force greater than evil can stop what’s coming next.

“Hello Summer.” Mary Kay Andrews. Conley Hawkins left her family’s small-town newspaper, The Silver Bay Beacon, in the rear view mirror years ago. Now, after ten years of blood, sweat, and tears, Conley is exactly where she wants to be and is about to take a fancy new position at a New York City newspaper. That is, until she discovers at her own going away party that her new job is suddenly gone, disappearing overnight along with her hopes and dreams. Conley ends up in the last place she ever wanted to be: The Beacon, now reluctantly run by her brother whose own dreams of being a lawyer were put on hold. Covering a sleepy beach town with church news and the local funeral home director dictating the day’s obituaries to her over the phone isn’t exactly every reporter’s dream. Matters come to a head after Conley witnesses a car accident that ends in the death of a local politician - a beloved war hero with a secret shady history whose death may not be exactly what it seems. Book Annotation

Below are some book recommendations by Heavin Hipp, a Hoisington High School student. We have added many new books to our YA section and plan to continue to work on our Fantasy section.

A Hipp Book Recommendation by Heavin

Simon VS. The Homosapiens Agenda: A wonderfully written debut novel from Becky Albertali that follows 16-year-old Simon Spier. When an email falls into the wrong hands he is faced with his secret getting out. He has to step out of his comfort zone before he is pushed out, without losing his shot at happiness. Did I read this in one day? Perhaps.

The Love and Lies of Raksauna Ali: Raksauna Ali is a Muslim girl growing up in Seattle, with her brother, who is blatantly favored, and her extremely strict parents. When her mom finds out that she is involved with someone she doesn’t approve of, they take her to Bangladesh where she is thrown into the world of arranged marriages and centuries of traditions. After some well needed advice from her grandmother she decides that love is worth fighting for and will do anything to get home. Reader be warned, every chapter threatens to tear your heart out and put it back crooked, but it’s worth it.

Both of these titles are available in print at the Hoisington Public Library, as well as in ebook and audiobook on Hoopla Digital.
