Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation has announced two recipients of the 2012 Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship.
Katie Schwartz will graduate with honors from Millard South High School, Omaha, Neb., on May 26. She is the daughter of Matt and Karen Schwartz, Omaha. Katie was diagnosed with a stage 3 undifferentiated sarcoma at the age of 9 months and was the reason that Kans for Katie (which later became Kans for Kids) began in 1994, to help defray her medical expenses. She has been cancer-free since 1995.
Schwartz plans to attend the University of Nebraska Omaha and major in elementary education.
Johnny Raat will graduate with honors from Plainville High School on May 19. He is the son of John and Crystal Raat, Plainville. He was diagnosed with brain tumors when he was 2 years old and again when he was 6, causing him to be blind. His tumors remain stable.
Raat plans to attend KSU and major in secondary math education.
Schwartz and Raat will each receive $1,000 renewable scholarships from Kans for Kids.
The Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of Becky Nicholson, daughter of Karen Nicholson and Bill and Pattie Nicholson. Any child who has received assistance from Kans for Kids while he or she battled cancer is eligible to receive the scholarship for five years of education beyond high school.
