Library starts May with 2 movies

Friday, May 1 is movie day at the Great Bend Public Library, according to Jennifer King, marketing and YA librarian.
The animated children’s movie, “The Boxtrolls” will be shown at 4 p.m. Friday.
Later that evening, the library’s Adults’ Night Out Movie will be “Get On Up.” This feature film based on the life of James Brown begins at 7 p.m. and anyone 18 and older is invited to attend. The north doors of the library will open at 6:45 p.m. and will close at 7:10.
“As always, both the movies and the popcorn are free,” King said.
Another movie night for adults will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 16. The featured movie is “The Theory of Everything,” based on the life of Stephen Hawking.


The Teen Spot at the library will have Teen Movie Monday at 4 p.m. on May 4. Students in grades 7-12 are invited to join in on a screening of “Dumb & Dumber To.” Other Teen Movie Mondays include: “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” on May 11; and a movie based on the book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” on May 18.


Technology Tuesdays
The library will offer free Tech Tuesday classes: “Introduction to Computers” at 7 p.m. on May 5;  “Introduction to Microsoft Word 2010” at 7 p.m. on May 12; and  “Introduction to Publisher” at 7 p.m. on May 19. Preregistration is required and may be completed at the library or online.
Free technology assistance will be available at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26. During this “Open Tech Hour,” members of the public may drop in with questions or devices and get assistance. No registration is required.


More events
Magic the Gathering is returning to the Great Bend Public Library on Thursday, May 7. Players meet every Thursday at 5 p.m. for casual gameplay. Participants must be 16 or older. Any 16- or 17-year-old participant must submit a one-time parental consent to the library.
The Adults’ Night Out Craft will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 7. This month’s craft will feature two homemade body scrubs: Grapefruit and Mint & Coffee.
“This is the perfect gift for the upcoming Mother’s Day or a special treat to make for yourself,” King said. Space is limited so registration is required.
The Open Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. This month’s book club pick is “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. Anyone is invited to attend and refreshments will be provided.
The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will hold its Day o’ Stuff from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.
“This month’s Day o’ Stuff will also be the Teen Spot’s official welcome to the graduating 6th grade class as they are welcomed into the Teen Department at the library,” King said. “This month’s stuff is a Bring Your Own Banana event.” All participants must be in grades 7-12.


The library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25.
