Many items have already been donated to Sunflower Diversified Services, but it is still collecting auction items for the 6th Annual Charity Gala. Those who attend the non-profit agency’s biggest fundraiser of the year will have the chance to bid on a wide variety of products and services.

The Charity Gala is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the Heritage Room at the Highland Hotel, 3017 10th, Great Bend. Sunflower serves babies, toddlers and adults with developmental disabilities in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties.

"We are hoping for an especially big turnout since this year is Sunflower’s 45th anniversary," commented Connie Oetken, director of development. "With the auctions, prime rib dinner and a couple of games of skill and chance, there should be something for everyone."

Some live-auction highlights include a three-night vacation at Lodges of Table Rock, autographed University of Kansas basketball photograph, topaz ladies ring, African amethyst ladies ring, antique telescope, Kindle, iPod, GPS golf unit, two chairs, shrimp boil for 10, deer hunt, storage cabinet, Calvin Klein and Harley Davidson sunglasses, one-year Curves membership and cookware.

There also will be many items in the silent auction.

"Anyone who wants to donate an item, become a Gala sponsor and/or reserve a spot at this great event is encouraged to give me a call," Oetken said. "This major fundraiser allows us to help fill in the financial gaps not covered by tax revenues.

"Our special needs for people with disabilities always include adaptive equipment, communication devices, medical and dental care, and a variety of in-home supports," Oetken added. "Tax dollars cannot cover our many needs but we have always been able to count on the generosity of central Kansans."

Gala tickets are $100 each. This donation includes the prime rib dinner, hors d’oeuvres, an open bar and wine at each table. Scott Donovan will be the emcee and Mike Niedens the auctioneer.
