The Dominican Sister of Peace Motherhouse at 3600 Broadway Ave. will host an open house with tours on July 25 and Sept. 27.

Dominican Sisters of Peace who call the Great Bend Motherhouse home are opening their doors to the public in July and again in September in an effort to offer the community a chance to visit and walk the grounds before it closes its doors at the end of 2026.

The two open houses are being offered so family, civic and faith communities, former members, and congregational friends can visit the Sisters. Tours of portions of the Motherhouse will be offered.

The Great Bend Motherhouse Open Houses will take place Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, Sept. 27. Both tours will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

“We have spent almost 125 years ministering to people in Kansas, in various states, and in Nigeria. We are thankful for that and for the faithful lives lived in this building but now God is leading us to new homes. We hope the community will wish the Sisters well in their move and in their next ministries,” said Sr. Charlotte Brungardt, a longtime Kansas resident and Dominican Sister of Peace.

Visitors will be able to tour the Chapel of the Plains, the Sisters’ Heritage Room, the Heartland Center for Spirituality, stroll in the garden and shrine areas, and offer prayer at the Resurrection Cemetery.

Photo albums, displays, scrapbooks and a list of items contained in the cornerstone of the Motherhouse, built in 1940, will also be available, and will help tell the story of the Sisters, their Motherhouse, and the congregation’s ministries. Light refreshments will also be available.

The Great Bend Motherhouse is located at 3600 Broadway Avenue, Great Bend. There is no registration necessary for the tours. Accessible entrances are available at the west end of the Motherhouse and also by entering the property using the 17th Street driveway.
