Historical Village

The movie “With Each Turn of the Wheel: The Santa Fe Trail 1821-1996” will be shown Monday evening at the Barton County Historical Society meeting. The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. July 24 at the Barton County Historical Society Museum at 85 U.S. 281, just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend.
This month’s historical society program is being held in cooperation with the Quivira Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association. The program is open to the public.
Produced for the Public Broadcasting System, “With Each Turn of the Wheel” was made in conjunction with the 175th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail. Running time of the film is just under an hour.
As a young nation, the United States rolled westward into foreign lands, pursuing a policy of Manifest Destiny and changing lives in search of fortunes forever. This program reexamines the history of this great American event from the point of view of the Hispanic and Native American residents of the New Mexican territories.
