The Great Bend Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Oceans of Possibilities,” is at its halfway mark, which means the staff have taken a week off from the special programs that wowed audiences in June. The sea-themed events will resume next Wednesday, July 13, with a magic show (see related story) and the fun will continue through the rest of July.
That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do at the library this week, said Haylee Huddleston, Teen Services director at the library.
Two scavenger hunts offered at the library continue until July 16. Several adventurous souls have already completed these quests.
Sink or swim
The Choose Your Own Scavenger Hunt for teens and preteens in grades 6-12 starts at the Teen Spot in the library.
Here’s the scenario:
You are aboard the Titanic, the world’s largest ocean liner. The ship has hit an iceberg and is headed to the bottom of the sea! Participants can choose to start as a first-class passenger, a third-class passenger or a crewmate in this fictionalized journey, Huddleston said.
Kaitlyn Froetschner, who will be an eighth-grader this fall at Great Bend Middle School, said she chose option one and followed the clues. “I was able to make it off the Titanic and live,” she said.
Treasure in town
All ages can participate in Captain Hook’s Library Treasure Hunt.
The scenario here is that Peter Pan has hidden Captain Hook’s treasure and has left clues with other famous pirates around town. Start at the Great Bend Public Library if you’re feeling adventurous. Read the clues that will send you on a hunt to find the famous pirates in downtown Great Bend that will lead you to your treasure!
This hunt involves walking and can be done any time of day.
Plan one hour or longer to complete the hunt.
