Gridders, parents make pledge

Following is a copy of the pledge that the Larned High School football players’ parents have made and the commitment of the Larned Indian football players and managers have made for the upcoming year, provided to The Tribune by LHS Head Football Coach Al Troyer.

The high school and middle school years are a time of great change in a student’s development. Our children mature during these years; learning and experimenting. They are faced with choices that are difficult.

School functions, academic and social, are always well supervised. Unfortunately, this is not always the case when social gatherings are held outside of school. Unsupervised social gatherings may result in situations where our children make poor choices. In an attempt to greatly reduce the circumstances whereby children are placed under extreme peer pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol at unsupervised gatherings, the Larned Indian Football Program will compile a list of parents/guardians who have signed the statement printed below.

The statement sets forth the basic responsibilities of parents/guardians who either host a social event or allow their child to attend such an event. When your child is invited to an event at the home of another child, we suggest that you check the listing. If the parent/guardian has not signed the statement assuring other parents/guardians that parental supervision will accompany the gathering, it would be appropriate to contact the host parent/guardian to verify the status of the event.

We suggest that should supervision not be provided, you consider not allowing your child to attend. Although parenting can be difficult, our responsibilities include supervision.

By communicating with each other, we can reduce peer pressure on our children, thereby limiting the circumstances where they will feel pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol. The Larned Indian Football Program hopes the statement reflects the common sense that all of us would use.

Larned Indian Parent Pledge

I will not allow parties in my home when I am not there.

If a party is held in my home when I am not there, I will attempt to notify the parents of all children who attended the party.

I will not serve nor will I allow youth under the legal drinking age to consume alcohol or other controlled substances in my home or on my property.

If I am the host parent/guardian of a social gathering; I will call the parent/guardian of anyone possessing drugs or alcohol or who appears to be under the influence of an illegal substance.

I will set a definite starting and ending time for the event.

I will inform my children that I have signed this statement, and I will discuss the contents with them.

Space then follows for names of parents or guardians, phone numbers, signatures of the involved parties, and names of students and which USD 495 school they attend.

Please check one of the following and return to the school office or to Coach Troyer.

_____I have signed and discussed this statement with my child and wish to be counted in support of this statement. I understand that my name and my child’s name will be published in the local newspaper and/or the school newsletters which may include on-line presentations through a Website.

_____I have signed and discussed this statement with my child and wish to be counted in support of this statement. However, I do NOT wish to have our names published in the local newspaper and/or the school newsletters which may include on-line presentations through a Website.
