FREDONIA — Thanks to an ill-advised tiebreaker, the Larned 13-year-old Babe Ruth missed the semifinals of the Babe Ruth State Tournament.
Larned finished 2-1 in pool play, but lost a tiebreaker against Fredonia and Pittsburg, which also finished 2-1. Fredonia yielded five runs in three runs, the first tiebreaker.
Larned yielded 16 runs and Pittsburg 19 runs, but the second tiebreaker was switched to head-to-head. Larned beat the Southwest All-Stars and lost to Pittsburg 10-9.

PITTSBURG 10, LARNED 9 — The Larned Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars lost a 7-0 lead and lost 10-9 to Pittsburg. Blake Harrison drove in the game-winning run. Larned scored four first-inning runs keyed by Trevor Bartz’s two-run single. Aiden Smith drilled an RBI single.
Brett O’Hara limited Larned to two runs over 5.2 innings. Larned scored two third-inning runs for a 7-0 lead. Pittsburg scored four runs in the third inning and added a fifth-inning run for a 7-5 score.
Larned scored twice in the sixth inning on Andreas Tucker’s RBI single, which led to a collision at first base that allowed a second run to score for a 9-5 lead.
LARNED 3, FRONTENAC 2 — Larned outdueled the top finishing team in the pool.
