STAFFORD — I have never been more ready to be in the “BER” months. The hundred-degree days have been hanging in there longer than I believed possible, but fall temps have to be close to reality.
September is a busy news month with Remembrances of 9/11, gearing up for mid-term elections, and this September, Gloria Steinem’s death has us looking back at the role of women in our world.
At 70+ years, my mind is blown at the history our generation has lived through and the daily flow of information at our fingertips. My takeaway from it all is to try to stay well informed on daily events in our world. Keep in mind that technology can bring a wealth of information into your home. It is up to each individual to scrutinize each source of information and draw responsible conclusions and not go crazy with “conspiracy theories,” irresponsible media posts and click bait.
I still believe each vote counts and it is every voter’s responsibility to be as informed as possible. That is very hard to do with all the negative ads and misinformation that is bombarding us everyday. The wrong thing to do is to throw up your hands and refuse to vote. Instead, use your brain and think back to sources you know have rung true in the past and begin to inform yourself and be a responsible voter. There is still time to inform yourself before mid-term elections, find some sources you can trust.
Libraries are the “information stations” of our communities.
September also brings Football! It was a hot one Friday night as we watched our grandson play at Pratt. The green of the Greenbacks got darker and darker throughout the game and by the end of the game their uniforms appeared black because of the “sweat equity” that brought them a victory. Sports are a very important addition to life lessons for our kids and enhance our sense of community. Support your local schools; they are growing our futures.
The picture this week is of our 120-year-old stained glass window of Nora Larabee. The colors and sparkle can not be embodied through the camera’s eye. You have to be present to fully appreciate the beauty. The same can be said of each of our days.
