A free bin for disposal of damaged or tattered U.S. flags can be found in the Barton County Courthouse Rotunda. The free bin was provided through a joint undertaking by the National Association of Counties and the Kansas Association of Counties. Sheriff Brian Bellendir will dispose of the collected flags.

A flag retirement ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Ellinwood American Legion Post 320, located at 117 East Santa Fe Blvd.

A Barton County post on Facebook explains the purpose of the free bin in the courthouse:

“One way to honor our veterans is to honor our flag. So remember the U.S. flag should never be thrown in the garbage. The flag code states that ‘The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.’”

Other points to consider:

• The flag should be held aloft and free.

• The flag should not be printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discarded.

• Only the president or the governor can order the U.S. flag lowered to half-staff.

• No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.

• When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
