A slow and gentle approach to yoga will be demonstrated during the next Interactive Television (ITV) presentation at St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center. It is free and open to the public.
“Yoga in Chairs” is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 in the basement-level St. Dominic Room at St. Rose. Susan Rieger, yoga instructor, will lead the session.
“This class is designed for anyone with cancer or other chronic illness, and their families and caretakers,” Rieger said. “They can learn about this gentle approach to yoga that is appropriate for almost everyone. It can be performed even in a wheelchair.”
Yoga can help those touched by illness in several ways, Rieger said. “It can boost the immune system and reduce stress, thus helping participants cope with pain and calm their emotions,” the instructor explained. “Yoga in chairs encourages freedom of movement in the joints and engages core and leg strength, which improves balance.
“In addition,” Rieger continued, “it increases blood circulation and leaves the participant feeling mentally and physically refreshed.”
The first part of the class entails sitting tall in a chair, coordinating the breath and slow movement. Next come standing poses with the support of the chair for those who are able. The session ends with a relaxing, seated meditation.
“This could be a gift to yourself and your loved ones,” Rieger commented. “The movements are safe, easy and soothing. After the class you will most likely feel relaxed and happy, and maybe energized. Other people may even notice that you seem more at ease.”
This ITV presentation is one of a series sponsored by St. Rose, the Midwest Cancer Alliance (MCA) and Turning Point. St. Rose became involved nearly a year ago when it became an MCA member.
