Sunflower helps raise funds for fireworks display

For the second consecutive year, Sunflower Diversified Services is branching out into the community to raise funds for the July 4 fireworks display at the Great Bend Expo grounds.
“This is an important national holiday that every community likes to celebrate,” said Connie Oetken, Sunflower director of development. “Great Bend has a history of a great fireworks show and we want to help keep it alive.
“Sunflower is not paying for this event,” Oetken noted. “Rather, we volunteered to help raise the money necessary to have a great, patriotic show on the Fourth. All donations to this effort will be earmarked for the fireworks show.”
Sunflower served in this fundraising role last year, and the community appreciated it, Oetken added.
“Local and area residents have thanked us and all the others involved in this effort,” she said, noting the city of Great Bend is a partner. “We will do whatever we can to make this year a success too.”
Businesses and individuals may send donations to Sunflower, 1521 K-96, Great Bend, KS 67530. Anyone with questions may contact Oetken by calling 620-792-1325, ext. 111.
Sunflower, a non-profit agency, serves infants, toddlers and adults with developmental disabilities in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties.
“We encourage people from all over our service area to get involved,” Oetken said. “Their donations and attendance at the show will be appreciated.”
