Vehicle malfunction causes ditch fire Friday
on the record

HOISINGTON — Hoisington firefighters responded to a small highway ditch fire caused by a vehicle malfunction near the Kansas Brick and Tile plant Friday afternoon.

Hoisington Fire Chief Jerry Stricker reported that the department was alerted to the fire in a call from the plant at approximately 2 p.m. Friday.

On arrival, firefighters observed that flames from a vehicle had burned a small portion of the ditch near the 700 block of North U.S. 281, which was quickly extinguished, Stricker said.

“The driver had apparently just purchased the vehicle and as they passed the plant, the occupants of the car heard a large boom coming from underneath with flames shooting out. A small patch of ditch was ignited, but that was all,” Stricker said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, the fire chief noted.

Wildfires are uncontrolled and destructive, but prescribed burning is an effective tool for landowners and managers needing to remove weeds and stop the advance of invasive species from pastures, said Veronica Coons at the Barton County Conservation District. However, but not everyone has access to the equipment, manpower and training for a successful burn. That’s where teamwork can help.
