Bicyclist dies in collision east of Great Bend Saturday
KHP patch

An Ellinwood man died Saturday morning after a bicycle he was riding was struck on U.S. 56 about 4 miles east of Great Bend.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 78-year-old Harold D. Carson of Ellinwood was traveling westbound on U.S. 56 at around 10:05 a.m. Saturday, and attempted to make a U-turn toward the eastbound lanes. A 2013 Dodge Journey driven by 29-year-old Mackenzie Trarbach, also of Ellinwood, was also traveling westbound and struck the bicycle, ejecting Carson from the bicycle. KHP reports indicate Trarbach did not see the bicycle prior to striking it.

Trarbach was examined at the scene for possible minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital. She was wearing a safety restraint at the time of crash, according to the KHP.

Carson’s obituary is available here.
