HAYS — LaVerne D. Stieben, 61, of Hays died Nov. 25, 2012 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.
LaVerne was born Jan. 25, 1951, in Great Bend, the son of William and Emma (Schwien) Stieben.  He was a graduate of Pittsburg State University.  He married Dorothy Koerner May 24, 1974, in Ness City.  He was a partner in Bieker Insurance for many years.  He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325, Optimist Club, NRA, and the Smoky Hill Chapter of Pheasants Forever.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of the home in Hays; a son, Jeremy,  Denver, Colo.; daughters, Stephanie Stieben, Hutchinson; Ashley Lamb and her husband, T.J., Ness City; Amber Weigel and her husband, Blake, Hays; a brother, Clyde and his wife Joan, Bazine; a sister, Karla Stallman and her husband, Vernon, Hutchinson; grandsons, Blake Stieben and Gunner Weigel,  future grandson Lamb, 59 nieces and nephews, and 34 great nieces and nephews.  
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Donald and Gary.
Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.  There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Friends may call at the church from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Friday.  
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be given to the Thomas More Prep-Marian Booster Club or to a LaVerne Stieben Memorial Fund to be used for youth pheasant hunts.  Condolences to the family at www.haysmemorial.com.
