Leona Marie Wess Blankenship 1918 - 2011

MISSION, Texas — Leona M. Wess Blankenship, 92, died April 1 at the Mission Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mission, Texas. Born April 27, 1918, in Great Bend, was the daughter of Theodore P. and Sarah Ellen Gilbert Wess. Leona Wess and Donald Carroll Blankenship were married on Oct. 11, 1935, in Great Bend. She was a homemaker on the farm until the girls started high school. She worked for Honaker Drilling Inc. and moved first to Oleander Acres and then to Enchanted Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas.

Mrs. Wess was a member of the Central Christian Church in McAllen, Texas and the Soroptimist Club in Great Bend.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Simmons of Mission, Texas, and Lois Crump of Tuscan, Ariz.; grandsons, Donald Simmons of Mission, Texas, Ronald Simmons (Brenda) of Alamosa, Colo., and Nathan Crump (Laura) of Falls Church,Va.; granddaughters, Adrienne Crump (Gary Roberts) of Tuscan, Ariz. and Laura Crump Green (Tim) of Alexandria, Va.; eight great-grandchildren; three nephews and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Gibert Wess and Lavern Wess; niece, Janice McLeland; and son-in-law, Wm. Jerry Simmons.

The body will be cremated and there will be no memorial services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Christian Church or School, 1320 Nolana,McAllen, TX 78504.
