Barton women down Cloud County

Barton Community College limited Cloud County's women to 22% shooting and 30% from 3-point range en route to a 61-45 Jayhawk Conference basketball game.

Barton placed Vivian Onugha (17), Tatum Boettjer (12),  Quezia Bertoni (12), McKenna Vogl (11) in double figures. The Cougars played without Reigning NJCAA Player of the Week Vera Ojenuwa, who scored 51 points and grabbed 41 rebounds last week. 

Vivian Onugha grabbed a career high 18 rebounds including seven from the offensive glass for her eighth double/double. Pretty Prairie's Vogl finished with career highs of 11 points and 12 rebounds, five on the offensive side.

Bertoni and Boettjer each converted two treys. Grace John dished out seven assists. St. John's Darby Smith contributed four points and three rebounds.

Barton (16-5, 11-4) stays two games ahead of Coffeyville for fourth place and drops Cloud (12-8, 8-7). The Cougars play at Cowley College (5-10, 11-10) Saturday.

After a 9-0 run, the Cougars led 34-17 at halftime and Cloud never rallied. Barton sealed the victory with a 12-0 scoring run for the Cougars' 10th straight win in the series.

The Cougars dominated the boards 55-44, leading to a plus-12 in second chance points and a plus-16 margin in the paint.

Cloud's Destiny Smith (13) and Bailey Burns (11) led the TBirds. Maimouna Sissoko grabbed 15 boards.

NOTES — Barton has won 10 straight in the series. Barton has won the last eight meetings in Great Bend. Barton leads the series 28-12 in Great Bend and 47-35 overall.

OJENUWA HONORED — Vera Ojenuwa of the Barton Community College women's basketball team snagged her first collegiate KJCCC weekly award honor while also scoring the week's national distinction as the week 10 NJCAA Women's Basketball Division I Player of the Week.

Ojenuwa earned the honor guiding the Cougars to a 69-49 road victory over Independence before helping Barton avenge an earlier season with an 80-49 home victory against Pratt.

Over the pair of games, Ojenuwa finished shooting 20-of-35 (57.1%) from the floor averaging 25.5 points and 20.5 rebounds in 34.5 minutes of court time.

The freshman opened her week dropping 23 points aiding the Cougars to a plus 24-point advantage inside the paint while corralling a game high 18 boards in 33 minutes.

Fresh off career highs Wednesday, Ojenuwa exceeded both performances notching her team high 10th double-double of the season adding 28 points on 12-21 shooting and collected 23 rebounds.

The award marks the first won by a Cougar this season. Barton will conclude its' brief two game homestand Wednesday evening hosting Cloud County Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off inside the Barton Gym.
