The Hutchinson women’s basketball team has taken many teams to the woodshed this season. The No. 3 ranked Blue Dragons made Barton their latest victim Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
Hutchinson scored on its first possession and never looked back on the way to a 93-48 win over the Cougars.
With the win the Blue Dragons (22-0, 13-0 Jayhawk) remain unbeaten. Barton (14-7, 7-5) has lost 20th consecutive games to Hutchinson.
The blowout win is nothing new for Hutchinson. It was the sixth straight win by more than 30 points in the Jayhawk. Through 13 conference games, Hutchinson has beaten its Jayhawk foes by 30 in eight of them.
Only once has a conference team played the Blue Dragons to a single digit game. In fact, in 22 games this season, that 87-78 win at Neosho is the only single digit game to date.
Since Dec. 28, the Blue Dragons have won 10 games – nine by at least 20 points and eight by at least 30.
Consider that Barton just took the No. 11 ranked team in the nation and the second place team in the Jayhawk to overtime at Seward County Saturday and Hutch has clearly separated itself from the rest of the conference.
It wasn’t a contest for long Wednesday. Hutch reeled off 15 straight points in the first quarter to take a 23-3 lead and that was pretty much all she wrote.
At the end of one, Hutch led 31-8. The Blue Dragons scored the first seven points of the second period to get the lead to 30 at 38-8.
By half, Hutch had long since delivered the knock out punch, leading 53-23 as Barton scored the final seven points of the half..
The biggest lead of night was 53 as the Blue Dragons scored their biggest win over Barton the series history.
Richelle Turney led Barton with 14 while Fatou Ndao added 10. Taylor Regan, the reigning back-to-back Player of the Week in the Jayhawk, scored nine points and led Barton with eight rebounds.
Dejanae Roebuck led four Blue Dragons in double figures with 24.
Barton will be at home for its next two games as well. Saturday, the Garden City Broncbusters come to the Barton Gym. Monday the Cougars will host Allen County in a make up contest from earlier his month. Tip is 5:30 pm for both games.
