Strong second day moves Barton men to fourth in Jayhawk golf meet
spt CougarHead2C

The opening day of the second Jayhawk Conference meet wasn’t ideal for the Barton men’s golf team. The weather wasn’t the best and neither was the Cougars golfing.
Fortunately for Barton, day two was better. Much better.
The Cougars shaved 19 strokes off their first day total, made up a 20-stroke deficit on the team directly ahead of them and were just three strokes from having the second best overall team score of the day.
In the end, those numbers gave Barton a fourth place finish at Cottonwood Hills in Hutchinson. Hutchinson won the meet with a 611 followed by Dodge City with a 617. The Conquistadors made things interesting the final day, shooting 300 and making up 10 strokes on the Blue Dragons.
From there it was a ways back to third place and Garden City, which shot 638. Barton finished with a 645, shooting a 313 the second day to pass KCK for that fourth spot. The Blue Devils ended with a 654.
“We hit the ball very good the second day,” Barton Coach Doug Kaiser said. “After struggling the opening day we got things rolling on day two. We just need to play better that first round.”
In all six Cougars played in the tournament with five playing for a team score and another as an individual. All six golfer shot within six strokes of each other.
Freshman Jakkapat Horsangchai led the way with an 82-78—160 and tied for 10th place overall. Three strokes back were sophomores Jared Oelke and Andrew Iverson. Oelke, from Ellinwood, shot 84-79—163 while Iverson shot a 77 on the opening day before closing with an 86 for his 163. Iverson played as an individual.
Sophomore Natchapol Srinoon was one stroke back at 85-79—164. Blake Huxman, a sophomore, and Seokunh Kang, a freshman, finished with 165. All six golfers were among the top 25 in the tournament.
“We didn’t have anyone shoot a bad round,” Coach Kaiser said. “If we can just get one or two kids to step up and shoot in the low 70’s, we are right there.”
Barton will head to Sand Creek Station Monday and Tuesday to take part in the Region VI Championship. It will be the final conference meet of the season and the final meet before the District III Championships later in the month.
