Liberal High School traditionally has been notorious for having a speedy track and field team, and the Great Bend Invitational proved to be no different.
At least that was the case on an overcast Tuesday afternoon inside Memorial Stadium.
The Redskins captured the boys and girls team championships at Memorial, while Great Bend finished third in both divisions. Other teams competing included Hutchinson, Dodge City and Hoisington.
Great Bend’s Matt Moyd won the 100-meter dash (11.25), 110 hurdles (14.96) and 200 dash (23.09), and Chris Burley won the pole vault. Meanwhile, Jacy Quade nailed down first-place finishes in both the shot put and discus for the Lady Panthers.
“Liberal always has great speed, Hutchinson has very good speed and Dodge has had good speed as of late,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said. “Matt was hands-down the fastest kid at the track meet today. He really dominated the 100, dominated the 110 hurdles and dominated the 200.”
Moyd also ran the anchor on the Panthers’ 4x100 relay, which placed second. First-place Hutchinson’s time was 44.77, and Great Bend clocked 44.88.
“(Moyd) actually really got the stick five yards behind in the 4x1,” Black said of Moyd, “and he made it a photo finish at the end.
“He is just blessed with a lot of athletic ability and he showed that today … just a very talented kid.”
Quade eclipsed her previous best in the shot put for the second straight meet with a heave of 39 feet, one inch, topping her 38-10 effort in the first meet of the season at the Junction City invite on March 30.
Quade fell short of her personal-best throw of 130-3 in the discus, turning in 128-7 on her home field.
“It the same things that we always talk about her,” Black said. “She had another good day for us.”
Chris Burley, who had a personal-best 14 feet in his speciality, the pole vault, at Junction City, cleared 13-0 on Tuesday, good for the top spot.
“It’s just a finicky, finicky event in track and field,” Black said. “He just didn’t have his best day, but 13 feet is still pretty doggone good.
“He’s just a great competitor. I’m sure he’s disappointed in it, but there’s a lot of track left for him and he did a good job.”
The pole vaulters had a crosswind blowing east to the west, which hampered overall performances.
“The crosswind, it blows your pole sideways and you have to try to keep it stable,” Chris Burley said. “And that’s before you even get into the jump and you’re worrying about your crosswind instead of worrying about your jump.
“I just didn’t have it in me.”

Hoisington’s Rose dominates
Competing against larger-class competition, Class 3A Hoisington’s senior mainstay, Savannah Rose, blazed the girls field, winning the triple jump (36-6), long jump (16-8 ½) and 400 dash (1:02.11) — the most first-place finishes any one girl established.
Rose was the state champion in the long jump last season, sailing 17-0 ½ at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
