Defending 1A state champion Central Plains downed Victoria and St. John downed Kiowa County as two Central Prairie League teams advanced to Saturday's Class 1A, Division 1 state volleyball championship. 

Central Plains also won a 2A state title in 2015. St. John captured state volleyball championships in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

The Oilers (27-11) downed CPL rival Victoria 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10 to beat the Knights (25-6) in their fourth meeting of the season in Tuesday's 1A quarterfinals. The Oilers downed the Knights 25-22, 21-25, 25-20 Oct. 6 and lost twice to the Knights, 25-20, 25-16 and 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 Oct. 17 at the Central Prairie League Tournament.

"We have girls who are fighters," said Central Plains coach Lisa Crites. "Victoria makes hustle plays with strong hitters and good blockers. Whoever can finds a few holes in the defense will win."

The Tigers (21-17) downed Kiowa County (18-19) 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 in Tuesday's 1A quarterfinals. The Tigers' top players feature Payton Meyer, Darby Smith, Mariah Sanders, Kimbra Dowling, Heidi Fischer, Kaylynn Classen and Bailee Hudson.

SYLVAN GROVE SUBSTATE — Last year's 1A state champion Central Plains outlasted a pesky Sylvan-Lucas squad 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 in Saturday's Sylvan Grove substate volleyball championship. The Oilers beat Downs Lakeside 25-20, 26-24 in the semifinals.

The Oilers relied on front row player Melissa Donecker and back row player Mollie Steiner to replace standout Lexi Oeser, who is sidelined with an injury. 

"We had to play very well after we beat them in two sets the first time," said Central Plains coach Lisa Crites. "They had two hitters who caught fire. It's taken some time to get used to our new rotation with Melissa Donecker and Mollie Steiner. We got behind, but eventually our back row reads improved and we plays. We had the mentality that nothing hit the floor."

Lebo (29-3) qualified with a five-set victory over perennial powerhouse Centralia.

KINSLEY SUBSTATE — The St. John Tigers outlasted Central Prairie League rival Ness City 25-15, 25-14 to qualify for the 1A Division 1 volleyball quarterfinals. The Tigers downed Hodgeman County 25-11, 25-9 in the semifinals.

ATTICA — Attica's hard-hitting Allie Blurton and Cameron Lozoya plus clutch serving by Samantha Dark sparked the Bulldogs past Otis-Bison, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 in Wednesday's 1A Division 2 state volleyball quarterfinal.

Attica (28-6) advances to the 1A Division 2 state tournament at Emporia. Otis-Bison ends with a 16-18 record. The Bulldogs led all three sets 14-10 and pulled away with scoring bursts of 11-7, 11-5 and 11-2 in the final set.

Cougar hitter Lauren Maier played brilliantly with six winners in the opening set and 14 winners in three sets. Setters Johannah Baalmann and Destiny Doyle did a nice job giving Cougar hitters Maier, Macie Wiltse and Halee Morrison chances. Doyle's nice serve sliced the final set to 14-12, but Dark accounted for four winners and a 21-13 margin.

OTIS SUBSTATE — The Otis-Bison Cougars advanced to Tuesday's 1A Division 2 volleyball substate with a 25-16, 25-17 victory over Logan-Palco. The Cougars downed Stafford 25-17, 25-16 in the 1A semifinals. The Cougars (17-17) journey to Attica (27-6) for a 1A state quarterfinal match.

The Cougars start a lineup of Halee Morrison, Abbi Bahr, Macie Wiltse, Danica Bartonek, Lauren Maier, Johannah Baalmann and Kyra Ball is the Libero.
