Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Hoopla
The Book Nook

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library, and ¡feliz Cinco de Mayo! The popular celebration is just a couple days away, so I thought this would be a great time to talk a bit about its history. Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is not Día de la Independencia (Mexican Independence Day), as many commonly believe? In fact, Cinco de Mayo is hardly celebrated in Mexico. It is more a Mexican-American holiday to celebrate Mexico’s victory in Puebla over the French during the American Civil War. This was a big deal because the French were using their position in Mexico to support the confederates, and many consider this battle a turning point in the Civil War. Looking at it that way, it makes a lot of sense that we celebrate the holiday here: their victory was our victory! In 1863 the first observance of Cinco de Mayo took place in southern California to show solidarity and support for Mexico. Over time Cinco de Mayo has turned into less of a celebration of the victory itself and more a celebration of Mexican and Mexican-American culture.

Although commemorations of this historical event will look quite different this year, there are still ways to celebrate. Spend time with family, get takeout from your favorite Mexican restaurant, or read a book about the importance of Cinco de Mayo. Hoopla has several books on the subject,, including lots of children’s books so they can learn all about the holiday. Hoopla also has numerous books on Mexico in general, from food to culture to travel. Maybe check out a Mexican e-cookbook and try your hand at a new dish. For our Spanish-speaking friends who are already well acquainted with Cinco De Mayo, consider taking some time this year to check out one of the thousands of titles offered in Spanish on Hoopla.

As a reminder Hoopla is a free digital service for our library patrons. All you need is a library card! If you don’t already have a card, signing yourself up for one is simple. On our website, look under the “Online Resources” tab and click on “Register for an Account.” There you will find detailed instructions including a video with Spanish subtitles explaining the sign-up process. I hope everyone has a festive and safe Cinco de Mayo!
