Other items of discussion and actions taken included:
* The council adopted Ordinance 16-912A, adopting the “Standard Traffic Ordinance” 2016 edition, and Ordinance 16-912B, adopting the “Uniform Public Offense Code” 2016 edition.
* Per Vickie Oeser, the “Claflin” sign for the East end of town had been ordered.
* Acting Chief Vaughan gave an update on police cases and unkempt properties.
* Per City Superintendent Hayes, the work on the sewer plant fence should begin within the next two weeks. Also, the county is behind on their sealing so the city streets may not be done till October.
* The city will have the recreation building roof inspected.
* Following discussion concerning placement of the Christmas tree, no action was taken.
* Two agenda items were tabled until future meetings. The Be Well Barton County grant will be an agenda item at the October meeting. The Park Shelter will be revisited at the March, 2017, meeting.
CLAFLIN — When the Claflin City Council met Monday, Sept. 12, no hiring decision was made concerning the open police chief position previously filled by Rory Tillett, Tillett was hired April 12, filling a vacancy left by former Claflin Chief of Police Robert Gunder. At the Aug. 8 meeting, the city voted to accept resumes for the vacant position until noon, Sept. 12. Not finding a suitable replacement, the council agreed to continue to advertise the position and accept applications.
Several items concerning the Claflin Community Center were discussed. At the top of that list was the request from the Central Plains prom committee to use the center for the 2017 prom. The council agreed to allow the committee to rent the center from Wednesday through Sunday the week of prom for $275. Any additional time would be billed at the regular rate.
Council members noted appreciation to The Heartland Quilters for their donation of four new tables to the Community Center also, Also, one of the signs from the Learning Trail at the Community Center playground is missing. After discussion, council member Kelly Nixon agreed to contact the United Way of Central Kansas to inquire about how the city can go about replacing it at it’s own expense.
An executive session was requested for 25 minutes for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel. The City Council, City Attorney Robert Suelter, and Gary Vaughan were asked to stay. Upon return to regular session, no action was taken.
The next meeting of the Claflin City Council will be on Monday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Claflin City Offices.
