Since 2015, three applicants for the NRCS High Tunnel program have built and put into service tunnels in Barton and Rush counties. Following their first full growing seasons, owners of the tunnels have agreed to open their tunnels for a high tunnel tour, presented by the USDA, NRCS, Barton, Pawnee and Rush County Conservation Districts and K-State Research and Extension. This is an opportunity for those interested in this innovative method of growing produce to learn about the program to learn about the purposes of high tunnels and how they are being utilized locally. Information will be shared about how to install a high tunnel, and lessons learned by all three owners over the past season.
There will be three stops on the tour. The Barton and Rush County Conservation District urges those wanting to take part to RSVP through the offices in Great Bend, Larned, or LaCrosse by no later than Monday, Oct. 3. Directions to each of the three locations will be provided upon registration.
There will be three stops on the tour, starting with the Coons’ Farm at 4 p.m. Visitors will then travel to Heartland Farm, located 10 miles west of Great Bend. The tour will end at Swob Farm, northwest of Albert.
