The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host its annual Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party on Friday, Aug. 11. KWEC, located 10 miles northeast of Great Bend at 592 NE K-156, welcomes the public to enjoy free, family friendly activities beginning at 8:30 p.m.
Each year, as the Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet, the KWEC celebrates the end of summer by watching the meteors or shower activity. Stargazers may spot from 60-100 meteors per hour during this time.
Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfortable sky-watching.
The center will offer various space-themed crafts, science experiments, planetarium shows and games. In addition, special black light chemistry experiments will be set up in the auditorium.
Highlighting the evening, s’mores, a time-honored summer tradition, will be roasted at the center’s fire pit.
