As of last week, there is a new sign on the front of the Great Bend Events Center announcing to all who pass just what the building is.
The $5,000 silver, brushed metal sign reads “Great Bend Events Center” and was paid for out of last year’s center budget, said Christina Hayes, Great Bend community coordinator and Convention and Visitors Bureau director. “Originally the sign was supposed to be a light-up sign at the top of the awning, but that was actually going to cost another $20,000.”
So, Hayes decided to simplify it and just put wording and logo on the building. Mark’s Custom signs did the work, and it’s still missing the logo, address and the words “Travel Information Center,” “Convention and Visitors Bureau” and “Economic Development.”
“But, we will add the words when money isn’t so tight,” Hayes said. The new sign was paid for with guest tax funds out of the 2019 budget.
The Events Center is funded by revenue it brings in from events and the 1% of the transient guest tax that is charged for heads in beds at local motels, Hayes said. State statutes mandate that the transient guest tax promote tourism and conventions.
The city-owned center houses Hayes’ CVB office and the office of Great Bend Economic Development Inc. President Jessica Milsap. Located at 3111 10th St., it is a popular venue for conventions, gala events and private celebrations.
