Extolling his value to the county, the Barton County Commission Wednesday morning voted to promote Operations Director Matt Patzner to the post of county administrator.
On Dec. 21, 2021, the commission hired Patzner as the director of operations. Given the statutory responsibilities assigned to the county administrator, it was suggested that Patzner be appointed to that position.
This was the topic of a 20-minute executive session at last week’s commission meeting.
“I was sworn into office as county commissioner in January 2021. I’ve had the privilege of working with Mr. Patzner (as operations director) during my whole term as commissioner,” said commission Chairman Shawn Hutchinson, District 3. “That’s one title. During that time, Matt has had three titles - finance, human resource officer, operations director and now hopefully county administrator.”
Why?
“Matt believes in a team. He’s vested,” he said. He works with the employees under his supervision, the commission and department heads and “allows them to shine in their efforts.”
He’s worked for both the county treasurer and the county clerk before moving to operations. “During that time, he has learned from the ground up the checks and balances of our bookkeeping system. He knows our processes. And he’s had a hand in improving the system over time,” Hutchinson said.
“Matt is experienced, having worked under elected officials alongside other administrative employees,” he said. “He knows the daily, monthly and annual work that is required to keep the business of the county on a roll.
“He’s bright enough and involved enough to spearhead the special events that happen,” he said. “I enjoy working with Matt and I’m delighted to watch his career grow with Barton County.”
“I was lucky enough years ago to get to interview Matt and I was thrilled when he decided he would choose Barton County and come to work here,” said District 5 Commissioner Donna Zimmerman, who had served as county clerk. “I’ve gotten to work closely with you through county budgeting and numerous things and found you to be a top notch individual.”
“This is a great group of commissioners.” Patzner said, noting the department heads and other employees are wonderful to work with. “This is a great place to be.”
