RUSSELL COUNTY — A 13-year-old youngster died in an accident Saturday involving an off-road utility terrain vehicle, according to the Russell County sheriff.
Russell County EMS, Russell County firefighters and deputies responded to an accident in a pasture south of Russell at 10:37 a.m. Saturday.
Emergency responders discovered that Russell’s Cael Scott Evans, the driver of an off-road UTV, was ejected and trapped under the vehicle, according to the accident report. The Russell County deputy coroner pronounced Evans dead at the scene.
Russell’s Briar Ulrich, 12, was also ejected from the vehicle. Ulrich was transported to Russell Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to John Fletcher, Russell County sheriff.
Members of the Russell community gathered Sunday night at Fossil Lake for a candlelight vigil to remember Evans. Students and families also gathered over the weekend to hang red and blue ribbons around town.
Evans’ funeral service is scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Evans’ home, 18529 Walters Road in Russell. Burial will follow at the Bunker Hill Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present from 6-7 p.m.
