SYLVIA — Carl Marks, 77, died May 22 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was the son of Herb and Nellie Marks and was raised in the Zenith/Stafford community. Carl was a 1954 graduate of Stafford High School and Hutchinson Junior College. He proudly served in the United States Army for three years and went back to the “Oil Patch.” On June 8, 1963, he married Jeanette Kueck at Stafford. Carl was an avid hunter and wildlife enthusiast having helped establish Sunflower Mallards and had raised Greater Canada Geese to be released back into the wild for many years.
Carl was employed by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and retired from Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in 2003 after 30 years of service. He helped establish C & J Pumping Inc. in 1991, Oil/Gas Operator/Producer and was very much still involved in the “Oil Patch,” with help from Jeanette, Lori and Brent. Carl was a member of the Zenith Community Presbyterian Church at Zenith and was a faithful elder serving for many years. He served as Mayor and Council Member in Sylvia for 10 years and was a member of American Legion, Hutchinson Post 0068.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette; daughter Lori and husband Brent Waters of Great Bend; sister, Mary Bartlett of Apple Valley, Calif.; and a brother, Gene (Vicki) Marks of Great Bend. He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Keith.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 at Minnis Chapel, Stafford. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel. There will be a private burial at Sylvia Cemetery preceding the memorial service. Contributions may be sent to the Cancer Council of Reno County, Zenith Church or Kans for Kids/Camp Hope, all in care of the chapel.
