Duayne “Pete” Charles, 90, died July 6, 2016, at his home in Great Bend. He was born June 23, 1926 at Heizer, the son of William E. and Beta (Trauer) Charles. He was employed by Myers Water Well Service, and the Great Bend Fire Department from 1948 to 1968, earning the rank as Captain. Mr. Charles was a lifetime Great Bend resident.
He was a 1st Sgt in the United States Army, serving in World War II, 10th Mountain Division, and in Korea, as a combat engineer.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3111, Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Rich Charles of Great Bend and Duayne Charles Jr. of Wichita; a sister, Alberta Hurd of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one granddaughter, Karen Jean Burt, Middleburg, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Dalton Burt and Logan Burt. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen Jean Charles, and three sisters, Virginia Steinert, Matilda Bennett and JoAnn Charles.
Memorial services have been planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Bryant. Memorial honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley and Great Bend Fire Department Honor Guards. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial funds have been established with the Great Bend Fire Department or the VFW Post 3111, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
