Velma May Mettling, 87, died Jan. 15 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 4, 1925, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of John and Carrie (Unruh) Smith. On June 4, 1967, she married W. Gordon Mettling in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a teacher in the Newton, Oakley and Great Bend school districts.
Mrs. Mettling was a member of the First Assembly of God where she was Past Women’s Ministries President, and Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel, both of Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband, W. Gordon Mettling, of the home; one son, Alan Mettling and his wife Tracy of Great Bend; and two grandchildren, Katie Scarborough and her husband Lucas of Gorham and Matthew Mettling of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walton Smith and Elmer Smith; and two sisters, Irene Smith and Ruby Schultz.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Assembly of God in Great Bend with Pastor Dwight Dozier officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Missions Department or Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
